The instruments

Each instrument is built by one pair of hands, from the rough wood to the last adjustment of the soundpost.

Models

The workshop works mainly on classical Cremonese and Genoese patterns. The Guarneri “del Gesù” of 1743 kept in Genoa — Paganini’s “Cannone” — is a natural point of reference: its broad, powerful voice and its freedom of form leave a modern maker room for interpretation. Stradivari models and the outlines of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century Genoese makers are also available.

Wood

Spruce for the top and maple for back, ribs and scroll are chosen from long-seasoned stock. Weight, stiffness and the way each plate rings when tapped matter as much as the beauty of the flame.

Construction

Varnish

An oil varnish is applied in thin layers and cured slowly in natural light. It gives depth and transparency to the wood and allows the instrument to vibrate freely.

Fittings and set-up

Pegs, tailpiece and chinrest are chosen and shaped for each instrument, and the final set-up is carried out with the musician who will play it.

Violas and cellos

Violas are made in several body lengths to suit the player’s hand and reach; cellos are built with the same care for a strong, even response from the C string to the A.
