Bernardo Calcagno- 1740

In the mid of the eighteenth century the town of Genova had a particoular good activity in violin making and there was a consistent number of workshop producing violins, guitars and mandolins. Bernardo Calacanius is the most renowned maker of that period: he worked for about thirty years (1720/1750) dedicating himself mostly to violins violas cellos.

The instrument hereby represented is a good example of his maturity period, being made around 1745: the handsome two piece back of maple, the sides of the same wood, the scroll of a less figured maple, the belly of a strong grain sprouce that still retains the original graduation.

Although partially polished in the back, the oil varnish that covers the instrument is of good consistency. The violin sounds warm and strong, it bears all the features of the classical italian violin.
